Supporting Children After the Loss of a Baby Sibling

Helping practitioners and families navigate grief with care and confidence

Understanding the Challenge

When a new baby is expected, children often share in the family’s excitement — talking, planning, and imagining their new role as a big brother or sister.
But when the devastating news comes that the baby has sadly died, finding the right words to explain and comfort children can feel overwhelming.

Explaining miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal death is incredibly difficult. You may worry about saying the wrong thing or not knowing how to support a grieving child and their family.

We’re here to guide you through this sensitive process. Our funded Sibling Support Resource Pack has been created to help practitioners and settings feel confident and supported in these moments.
